TikTok and CRCA/ECPAT Albania Launch a Project for Digital Literacy

TikTok and CRCA/ECPAT Albania launched a comprehensive project aimed at equipping communities, with a digital literacy knowledge and skills, covering such aspects, as: responsible use of internet, safety measures and social communication.

Given the nature of the issue, the specific focus will be put on parents/caregivers and teachers, minors and women, to reflect the certain needs and attitudes of these groups and the particular risks they may encounter in the digital world. TikTok Digital Safety Agenda for Western Balkans, which is the name of the new initiative, covers six countries of the region: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. It is being organized in partnership with the Audiovisual Media Authority Supervisory in Albania, and Bosnia and Hercegovina, which play an indispensable role in promoting digital literacy.

“At CRCA/ECPAT Albania we strongly believe that by coming together authorities, civil society, the industry, we can make the digital space safer for children and young people, where they can benefit all the best aspects of technological development. A safe space for children, is a safe space for everyone.”

“TikTok’s ultimate mission is to provide an open, welcoming space, where everyone feels safe” states Łukasz Gabler, Public Policy Manager at TikTok CEE. “That’s why we’re expanding moderation to remove hateful content, we’re empowering our community by developing tools that improve safety and well-being and we engage in projects with trusted partners, like CRCA to better respond to local needs. We’re really proud of this project and we hope this will vastly support the awareness of the digital skills in the Western Balkans.”

Within the campaign, the CRCA will develop several informative/educational materials issued in local languages, which will support new teacher, law enforcement and child protection training programs. Additionally, three workshops for representatives of governmental institutions, national education associations, children and women rights CSO’s from the region will be conducted, as well as series of dedicated meetings for representants of key target groups along the year.

CRCA/ECPAT Albania is a leading child rights CSO in the Western Balkans, working to improve policies, legislation, and access to free public services for children and youths; end online and offline child and youth sexual abuse and exploitation; and end human trafficking. Over the past 28 years, ECPAT Albania has supported the Albanian Government and civil society organisations across Western Balkans to foster an environment where the rights of children and youth are respected, promoted, and protected. Since 2015 they run iSIGURT.al – the National Safer Internet Centre in Albania and a trusted flagger of TikTok. The platform actively engages in fighting violative contact – strictly forbidding among others: hate speech, hateful behaviours and bullying.

As per the latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, covering the Q2 of 2024, over 89% of the content under harassment & bullying was removed proactively, 82% for Sexual Exploitation & Gender Based Violence, and 88% under Hate Speech and Hateful Behaviours. Also conducts regular awareness campaigns, like on the occasion of 16 days of acting against gender-based violence, Safer Internet Day, or under #CreateKindness or #SaferTogether with millions of users being educated online about safe and responsible web usage.
