STOPLINE: Record number of reports in 2024

As the latest Stopline Annual Report shows, a total of 89,908 reports of CSAM and national socialism on the internet were submitted to Stopline in 2024. Unfortunately, in a large number of cases (65,980 reported cases in December 2024), the content could not be analysed because it was not technically accessible on the reported websites (e.g., due to paid file hosting platforms).

Of the approximately 24,000 reports that could actually be processed, 11,262 were classified as illegal – corresponding to a share of around 47%. This rate marks a new high in the number of valid reports since the hotline was established 27 years ago. A significant proportion (11,169 cases) related to CSAM. In 93 cases, illegal content related to National Socialist revival was identified.

“This development shows the high level of awareness among internet users. At the same time, the enormous volume of reports poses new challenges for Stopline's resources. Even if it was not possible to check the content itself, we had to manually check every single report to ensure that no relevant content was overlooked,” said Barbara Schloßbauer, project manager at Stopline.

In 2024 Austria was top the list of hosting countries for the first time. This was due to 2,480 reports of CSAM that were forwarded to Stopline by IWF. In fact, this was a single case involving a platform hosted by an Austrian provider. "Thanks to years of established cooperation within the industry with Stopline, providers, and LEA in Austria, all images depicting child abuse were immediately deleted.”
